We have two color variations of this amazing breed, we have French Black Copper Marans and French Blue Copper Marans. This breed originally comes from France and is prized with the deep dark chocolate brown eggs. It can be tricky to breed these birds to maintain that rich dark chocolate color, but we strive to stay a 6 or higher on the egg color chart. Some will have heavy blooms which can make the egg appear rose pink or purple. Our Marans do not have speckled eggs as speckles are not the standard for this breed. In height production, these birds tend to lay about 5 large eggs per week. These eggs are known for their thick shells and dense yolks.
The rooster for this breed are great protectors in the flock. We aim for feathered legs down through their outside toe with a nice copper color around their necks/hackles, as these are breed standards. Black variety is a black bird and the Blue variety is a light-dark blue/grey color. All of our birds have great dispositions, we do not keep mean/nasty birds for any of our breeding program. This breed can not be sexed as chicks and therefore will be sold as unsexed/straight-run meaning you will have a 50/50 chance for each chick to be male/female. This breed can be used as a dual-purpose breed, meat and eggs but is primarily for their chocolate eggs. They are on the larger side of chicken breeds, due to this they can struggle in high heat so keep an eye on them. They are very cold-tolerant. They are a docile, curious, communicative breed. They take about 5 months to reach maturity. They are great free-ranging birds, especially the roosters. This breed is moderately broody, meaning it isn't likely but it can happen. Our foundation breeders are mainly out of Alchemist lines and Sadie Girl Farm lines.
For our Marans, we are focusing on:
A hen that lays an abundance of good-quality eggs
Rich Dark Chocolate Brown Eggs with no speckles
A beautiful bird that meets APA Breed Standards
Feathered legs/toe and copper neck/hackles
A bird with a good temperament
We plan on hatching out our Marans February-June each year.
