Wyandottes

We have Silver Laced Black Wyandottes and Blue Laced Red Wyandottes. One of my favorite breeds to look at, these birds have beautiful laced plumage that stands out in any flock. These breeds are cold hardy with their rose combs and thick fluffy plumage. They also do well in the heat as long as they have shade available. They are on the larger side and can get up to 8 pounds, which is great as a dual-purpose breed for meat too. This breed is docile and friendly with a little bit of sass, some can be a little mean if at the top of the flock pecking order. These birds are excellent foragers. This breed does not tend to go broody, but will be good mothers if they do. They lay nice tan/pink eggs and are decent layers for a dual-purpose bird. They typically begin laying at around 7-10 months old and typically lay about 5 eggs/week. 

When we started our flock in 2024, we sourced our birds from different breeders including Foley's waterfowl, Brinkhaven Acres, and Featherbaby Farm. As chicks, we focused on temperament/disposition and adherence to breed standards. As they grew we monitored this criteria until we had our top birds. Once our four separate flocks are established we will practice spiral breeding with our birds to maintain genetic diversity and keep a self-sustaining flock. These breeds are incredibly slow maturing and often can't be evaluated until they are about 18 months old. 

Blue Laced Red Wyandottes are like most blue breeds, when you breed Blue Laced to Blue Laced you can get Blue Laced, Black Laced, or Splash Laced offspring. So we might often have Splash Laced Red or Black Laced Red Wyandottes available. Know that our focus is solely on the Blue Laced variety though. We choose to breed Blue Laced to Blue Laced only due to it creating the most consistent Blue Laced offspring. 

For our Wyandottes, we are focusing on a well-rounded bird: 

A deep-bodied round bird that is good for meat

A hen that lays an abundance of good-quality eggs

A beautiful bird that meets APA Breed Standards

A bird with a good temperament 

We plan on hatching out our Wyandottes February-June each year.
